CIS Forensics student contributes to a report on Facebook virus

Updated on Tue, 10/27/2009 - 10:06am

As reported by the Kaleidoscope on June 23, "A virus, masquerading as a facebook update e-mail or wall post, is circulating the internet and causing harm to many computers on campus." Computer Forensics student and analyst Brian Tanner was asked for his input on the issue and illuminated how the virus will attempt to lure you to install it on your computer while masquerading as a Flash Player or Active X update, which supposedly will enable you to watch a video which a facebook notification will direct you and your friends toward.

"That ‘update’ is actually the virus. It will then run a scan from a supposed anti-virus software that will detect a virus and ask you to enter credit card information in order to remove it. This info goes to someone who will exploit it", Tanner says. With the helpful input from Brian Tanner and others who contributed to the article there is now a reasonable idea of what to watch out for to avoid getting this virus.
