High School Interns Advance to State Science Fair

Robert Smyly and Oliver White, both Seniors at Mountain Brook High School, were awarded 3rd Place Overall/Team at the 2009 Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held at UAB on March 7, 2009. They will advance to the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held on April 2-4, 2009 in Huntsville, Alabama.


The title of their project is "Virtual Navigation of Multimedia Maps," which provides users with a capability to walk through a virtual area of a physical location. The project is similar to Google's StreetView, but allows a user to customize a map of a specific area, such as a building, amusement park, or museum. For experimentation purposes, the project was demonstrated by mapping out portions of the McWane Science Center.


Oliver and Robert conducted their research in the SoftCom lab with Dr. Gray.
