PhD Student Lin Yang Spends Summer at Google

Lin Yang, 3rd year CIS PhD student, was offered a 3-month summer internship at Google Research Labs and spent the past summer working with the Geo group under the supervision of Dr. Xiaqing (James) Wu, UAB CIS PhD alum and former student of Prof. Johnstone.

The Google internships are highly selective, with admission involving a battery of tests after selection by letter of recommendation.

Lin's work was mainly on the research side of the company, where he was responsible for designing and prototyping a new algorithm for extracting roads from satellite images, to be used in Google Maps.

Lin's advisers are Prof. Johnstone and Zhang.
