Original instruction from the department NOTE: Since Sep. 2002, you can use only shh program (www.ssh.com) to do ftp or telnet if you are using non-department ISPs (AOL for example). As usual, use this information at your own risk, 'coz I can't guarantee anything except this settning works on my computers. [ last updated on 02/01/03 - info on how to use a script file automatically to log in ] ============================================================= 1. For Microsoft Windows 98 ============================================================= note : I haven't tried this with Windows 95 but should work as well * Control Panel/Network/TCP/IP properties DNS configurations Enable DNS host : artemis domain : cis.uab.edu DNS server search order => add 138.26.65.1 Domain suffix search orer => add bridge.cis.uab.edu * Dial up Networking Right click on the connection/properties # General tab Configure/Options check "bring up terminal window after dialing" # Networking tab Type of Dial-Up server : PPP Advanced options check OFF both "enable software compression" and "record a log file for this connection" allowed network protocals: check IPX and TCP TCP/IP Settings button Server assigned IP address Specify name server addresses Primary and Secondary DNS are 138.26.65.1 Uncheck both "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" * CONNECTION ID : Pyour_id PWD: your_pwd there are two ways to input correct login information (the second one is better of course) 1. Manual input option # the same applied for the terminal window login after logging in press "continue" 2. using a script file for automatic logon use the script file (instruction is included in the file) that can be found at http://www.cis.uab.edu/info/grads/leebs/cis.scp ============================================================= 2. For Microsoft Windows 2000 ============================================================= Control Panel/Network and Dial-Up connections * Security tab Typical = allow unsecured pwd check show terminal window * Networking tab type : PPP all checked except "enable software compression" => this is very crucial : UNcheck "enable software compression" TCP/IP properties obtain IP address automatically (default) use the following DNS addresses for both Preferred and Alternate DNS servers 138.26.65.1 * General tab uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network" uncheck "Ues IP header compression" => this is very important : UNcheck "Ues IP header compression" * DNS tab DNS server address => there must be two 138.26.65.1 already Append these DNS suffixes in order bridge.cis.uab.edu DNS suffix for this connection : bridge.cis.uab.edu check "Register this connection's address in DNS" (default) uncheck "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration" (default) * CONNECTION ID : Pyour_id PWD: your_pwd there are two ways to input correct login information (the second one is better of course) 1. Manual input option # the same applied for the terminal window login after logging in press "continue" 2. using a script file for automatic logon use the script file (instruction is included in the file) that can be found at http://www.cis.uab.edu/info/grads/leebs/cis.scp ============================================================= 3. MISC ============================================================= * Phone numbers 934-0649 934-0650 934-0651 934-7224 934-8527 934-0648 975-7430 * Setting up PROXY # For internet explorer Control Panel/Internet Options * Connection tab for your UAB connection check Use proxy server address 138.26.65.1 port 3128 # For netscape Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Proxies/Manual Proxy configuration for HTTP, Security, FTP set address 138.26.65.1 port 3128 # for the MSN messanger make sure the iexplorer's proxy has been set first and then choose HTTP one * Email servers (the following work for both CIS.UAB connection as well as for other ISPs) Incomming POP3 : moat.cis.uab.edu Outgoing SMTP : pike.cis.uab.edu NOTE : if you are using an ISP other than CIS.UAB then moat.cis.uab.edu is the gateway (thus to be used only as such) to other servers (e.g., pike, vestavia) for teltet and ftp. In other words, you have to log on to moat first then from there open up a new connection to other machine. e.g.) telnet moat.cis.uab.edu => log in >telnet pike ============================================================= 4. Original instruction from the department ============================================================= Department of Computer and Information Sciences University of Alabama at Birmingham Dial-in modem service. The department now operates eight dial-in modems on the following telephone numbers: 934-0648, 934-0649, 934-0650, 934-0651, 934-0652, 934-7224, 934-8527, and 975-7430. The settings for this service are: eight(8) data bits, one(1) stop bit, no parity. This is sometimes referred to as 8N1. Each of these modems is connected to the department's network terminal server which has been upgraded to a U.S. Robotics (3-COM) Netserver/8 Plus. The modems are rated at 56K but phone line conditions may reduce the overall speed. There are two services available: TELNET and PPP. This server differs from the previous one in that your loginname and password are required upon connection without an intervening command set. This loginname and password are the same as the ones you use on the department's cis.uab.edu domain Solaris machines. A normal login sequence will produce a TELNET session on one of the department's Solaris hosts in the Graduate labs. These are automatically rotated on a "round robin" fashion. This host list will be expanded when the new Solaris workstations are installed later this year. To use the PPP service, prefix your loginname with the upper case character P. This will require your normal account password and will establish your PPP connecion on the server. Your session will be assigned an IP number in the range of 138.26.65.88 to 95. The changeover to this new server will occur on Thursday, March 5, 1998 at Noon. Please report any difficulty that you may might have with this service to Bruce Williams (Lab Supervisor) Computer and Information Sciences e-mail:will@cis.uab.edu University of Alabama at Birmingham voice:(205) 934-2213 Birmingham, AL 35294 facsimile:(205) 934-5473 March 3, 1998
