Background This web page documents two four-week summer robotics camps that were initiated and supervised by Dr. Jeff Gray and sponsored by the UAB CIS Department. The project was offered in collaboration with the Heritage Center, a human and community development center that has a successful history for matching high school students with UAB mentors. The first camp invited four students who already had computer programming experience, and the second camp was attended by two students who had never programmed before. In each camp, the students used Java and Eclipse to write software to control LEGO robots. Because the students had no prior experience in robotics, they were first given a series of problems to solve using the graphical language provided with the Mindstorms robots. The second camp also received instruction on Java from the mentor and his graduate students. Each camp was asked to solve several small-scale robotics problems in Java. Three large term projects assisted the students in understanding the skills needed to solve fundamental computer science problems involving challenging, yet fun, projects. A goal of these camps is to serve as an outreach effort that is used as a recruitment opportunity for encouraging high school students from underrepresented groups and economically disadvantaged school districts to pursue an advanced education in computer science at UAB. The following sections provide an archive of the two campus, including various text documents (e.g., syllabus, source code, and PowerPoint lectures) as well as numerous photos and videos.
