The Department of
Computer and Information Sciences offers two graduate degrees: the M.S.
in Computer and Information Sciences, and the Ph.D. in Computer and
Information Sciences.
All applications to the MS and PhD programs must be submitted online, using the following link:
UAB Online Application for Graduate School. Please do not apply directly to the Department of Computer and Information Sciences.
For Fall semester, all application materials must be received by
February 1. However, preference for financial assistance will be given to those who apply by
January 1. For Spring semester, all application materials must be received by
September 1.
Applications received
after these deadlines will sometimes still be considered, but there is
no guarantee. We do have more flexibility for domestic MS applications.
For the PhD program, typically more openings and more financial
assistance are available for entry in the fall semester. Therefore,
there is a preference for Ph.D. students to apply for fall semester.
However, there are still openings and financial assistance for spring semester.
Preparation of a graduate
application essentially requires the following items (but refer to the
online application form for more details):
- GRE exam
- TOEFL exam (note: TOEFL exam is unnecessary if English is your native language or you have a BS or MS degree from the US)
- Three (3) letters of reference, two of whom should be university faculty
- a statement of study plan (1 to 2 pages), including specific graduate study objectives
- further data on the online application form
Please note the following:
- You should allow three weeks for GRE and TOEFL scores to be reported to the Graduate School after the examination is taken.
- There is no formal summer application period, since the admissions committee dissolves for the summer.
