REMOTE VULCAN ACCESS If you have a PC with Internet access you can remotely access Vulcan machines 6 - 9 using SSH Secure File Transfer Client or SSH Secure Shell Client. SSH software for linux is already built-in. SSH software for Windows may be downloaded for free from: http://www.uab.edu/it/software/index.php Choose "Secure Shell Client (Win)" in the select box. Install the SSH software on your PC by running the downloaded file. To transfer files to or from your PC and your CIS directory use SSH Secure File Transfer as follows: After clicking on the SSH Secure File Transfer icon, click on the File tab then select Connect. Enter moat.cis.uab.edu for the Host Name and your CIS login name as the User Name. Press enter. Click yes for the next window (if asked), then enter your CIS password. Files may then be dragged from the Local Name window to the Remote Name Window (or the reverse). Directories may be opened by clicking on them. To make connecting easier you may create a profile. If you have your own Internet access you can use SSH to remotely log onto a vulcan machine. Connect to moat as detailed above, then click the Window tab at the top. Select New Terminal Window. Enter: ssh vulcanN where N is 6 to 9 Answer yes, if asked if you wish to continue, then enter your password again. You will now be in your home directory and can use the standard UNIX commands. Precautions when using SSH to access the department: On moat, do not do anything other than ssh to it, ssh from it to a vulcan, or drag and drop files in the File Transfer window. This means to not check your email, edit files or do anything else on moat. Connect through moat to a vulcan to do these things.
