Foundations of Virtualization

Course Description: This workshop is for IT professionals who are currently developing a virtualization strategy for their organization or are simply interested in learning more about the fundamental computer science concepts behind virtualization. This course will define the terminology of virtualization, explore the low-level concepts at the core of virtualization (e.g. emulation, instruction trapping, virtual devices), describe competing strategies towards implementing virtualization (e.g. full virtualization vs. paravirtualization vs. hardware assisted), and discuss the reasons why the industry is "rediscovering" this important approach that dates back to the earliest days of computing. The focus will be on virtualization of the ubiquitous x86 platform.

The workshop is vendor-agnostic; while specific products may be discussed and used for in-class demonstrations, the material is designed to provide IT professionals with a deeper understanding of the underlying techniques and the various approaches that vendors have taken, so that they can make informed decisions about virtualization in their organization.
