The University Environment

Birmingham is a major metropolitan area of almost 900,000 and is a southeastern center of finance, communications, and medicine. A wide variety of cultural, natural, and sports attractions are available. The area has a pleasant climate all year.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the public university for the primary urban area of the state. Included within the University are the Graduate School and Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Business, Education, Engineering, Public and Allied Health, Optometry, and Nursing.

The development of Oxmoor Valley Research Park on 1,595 acres of land near the UAB campus is proceeding with recruitment of high technology and engineering firms.

Over 17,000 students are pursuing their education on UAB's 270-acre campus, located between downtown Birmingham and Red Mountain. UAB ranks among the top public institutions in the country for federal research and development support, having attracted more than $100-million in such funds. UAB's Office for the Advancement of Developing Industries (OADI) provides an environment for the initiation of corporate/academic interchange. Many CIS graduate students are supported by OADI firms.
