Three CIS graduate students, Ritu Arora, Zekai Demirezen and Yu Sun, and their PDA Docter project are featured in the Birmingham News. The project aims to use PDAs as mobile medical diagnostic tools for use in poor, rural areas of the world.The three formed a competition team, called Arora Borealis, and are currently national finalists in the Microsoft Imagine Cup.

The CIS Department will host its first Fulbright Student - Tomaž Lukman, a PhD student from the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Tomaž will spend the 2009-2010 academic year collaborating with faculty and students in the SoftCom lab.

On March 28th, 2009, UAB sent two teams to the BearingPoint Programming Competition: the UAB Drakes (Jeff Frees, Eric Frees, and Patrick Butler) and the UAB Hydras (Yu Chang, Robert Cloud, and Daniel Mondy).

Software services added more jobs than any other US high-tech sector last year. And the technology industry in general continued to expand for the fourth year running, despite the slowing economy. According to TechAmerica's annual Cyberstates report, the US technology industry added 77,000 net jobs last year, expanding to 5.9 million workers. That compares with job gains of 79,600 in 2007, 139,000 in 2006, and 87,400 in 2005.

A UAB team consisting of Ritu Arora, Yu Sun, and Zekai Demirezen has won the semifinals of the Imagine Cup Software Design Challenge. They will compete in the Finals in Cambridge, MA in early May.

The CIS IT staff has launched a new service called the CIS Account Verification (cisv) tool. This tool allows users to quickly determine the status their CIS accounts using their BlazerID credentials.

Three computer scientists have been named the Professors of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Dr. Jeff Gray of the UAB Computer and Information Sciences Department was among the recipients of the award, which is co-sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with corporate support from TIAA/CREF.

Associate Professor Jeff Gray has been named the 2008 Alabama Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and is in Washington, DC to receive the award today.
